Diogenes Club, Pall Mall
September, 1914

Sherlock Holmes, in a rare display of emotion, pushed the doorman out of the way and exploded into the silent reading room.

‘You are retired, Mycroft! What bloody business of yours was it to get Dr Watson re-commissioned?!?’

After all these years, John Watson had only asked Mycroft for this one favour.

‘England expects that every man will do his duty. Major Watson knows his duty, and I know mine. Don’t even ask. I will not have him recalled.’

‘He fulfilled his duty thirty years ago! Mark my words, brother, if anything happens to him, I will never forgive you.’

An original and very plausible take on the prompt :)

Mycroft's stuck between a rock and a hard place there.

I suppose, though, that Watson wants not to feel as if he's become useless to the cause. Or perhaps to finish what he started as a young man.

Yes this really would be a betrayal in Holmes eyes. Though I can perfectly well see Mycroft agreeing to any one favor Watson might ever ask of him. The brother's responses are spot on. And oh yes, I do love the originality of this prompt response!

Thank you!
Sherlock Holmes is betrayed by both Mycroft and Watson in this fic.

I think Mycroft is more than a match for Sherlock, even when the great detective is most flustered.

Thank you!
And, thank you again!

"England expects that every man will do his duty"
The reports from the front would have been too compelling for Watson to ignore. He goes to war, not as a soldier, but as a doctor.

Mycroft would know what a good friend Watson has been throughout his association with Sherlock Holmes. And Watson would never ask for something frivolous. Of course Sherlock Holmes would want to keep Watson out of danger, and the continental war was the industrialisation of death.
(Thank you for your kind words!)

Indeed ;)

True enough, it's obvious that even if Holmes considers Watson's duty fulfilled, Watson himself doesn't.
