I returned from my afternoon constitutional to find my fellow-lodger, Mr Sherlock Holmes, in a rare ebullient mood.

‘Dust off your dinner jacket, Watson. I have tickets for tonight at The Imperial,’ he said, donning his waistcoat.

Ah, the theatre! As a student even the humblest London performances had been beyond my wallet. Even now, such opportunities were rare unless Holmes’ benefactor chose to gift him with his box. I hastened to change my clothes.

‘What is playing?’ I asked while adjusting my bow tie.

‘It hardly matters. To me, the audience is more fascinating than whatever transpires on stage.’

I can imagine poor Watson trying to concentrate on the play but keeps getting interrupted by Holmes's people-watching.

What an excellent bit of Holmesiana! I'd think Doyle would like that one.

LOL! Holmes would find the audience more interesting than the performance, wouldn't he? There's nothing quite like RL drama for providing entertainment. ;-)

Quite right. Why focus on one dull, farcical jewel-robbery on stage when you can deduce twenty crimes just in the orchestra section, and half a dozen scandals in the box seats?

That's a very Holmesian attitude towards the theatre, all right!

Somehow that doesn't surprise me. :)

And Holmes will have an audience of one while he analyses the audience of many:-p
