Sensing his guest’s requirement for solitude, Colonel Hayter thrust the fishing rod and creel into Dr Watson’s arms and gestured towards the vale where the quiet brook flowed. Watson did not have the conviction to argue.
Light played upon the water, little eddies formed in the shallows, and the occasional cicada whined from the pasture.
Gone were the unsettling elements of criminology and the increasing futility of practicing medicine amidst London’s great poverty.
In due course, footfalls were heard coming down the path.
‘You’re doing it wrong,’ said Holmes, espying the empty basket.
Watson smirked and cast his line again.
