His head ached with the dim memory of an ambush. Just how many concussions could a man sustain in his lifetime, he mused.

He would call out except for the flannel gag.

They had used a lot of rope, but not skilfully. ‘If you can’t tie knots, tie lots,’ his friend once told him.

‘Knots?’ If only he could remember the old escapologists’ tricks. Loosen something? No, first exhale. Gain any slack you can. Yes!

Now what? Oh…ribs broken. No, just bruised. Same thing, really.

He was held in place by cold hard iron. Railway tracks?

Must be July again.
