Alternate Ending Number One: (for med_cat, beta tester and reviewer extraodinaire)
The three lieutenants regarded each other; their faces pale. None of them could find words to respond to their narrator. So rapt was their attention that they had failed to notice the small audience of officers who had gathered around them. Nobody spoke. Nobody even moved. The long uncomfortable silence was finally broken by Captain Watson, one of the officers present.
“Holmes. What are you doing? Those are not your stories to tell.”
“Forgive me, Doctor. These three were in need of a history lesson,” he replied, standing to leave.
“Excuse me Captain Watson. That story? Those people? It wasn’t really like that, was it?” Talbot asked anxiously.
“No, Talbot,” replied Watson, sadly. “It was worse.”

Alternate Ending Number Two: (for bartimus crotchety whose opinions I also greatly value)
"Corporal Murray,” he said quietly, his handshake pulling the gentleman into a solid embrace. “Welcome home."
