John and Mary
Title: John and Mary
Author:
capt_facepalm
Rating: PG
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Gaslight ACD)
Characters: Dr John Watson, Mrs Mary Watson
Summary: It's a drabble (res ipsa loquitur)
Warnings: (none)
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes:
watsons_woes October 2014 prompt: Ghost Story
Weary after another long day’s work, Dr John Watson retired early.
Often he would just be nodding off when Mary came to join him.
Silently, as not to disturb his rest, she slipped into their room.
Shifting slightly as to share warmth of their bed, he related the events of his day. Sometimes it was a tale from his little practice, or perhaps an interesting case brought to Mr Holmes by an eccentric client. Never anything too alarming: he did not want to cause her to worry.
And Mary would listen indulgently and smile, just as she had in life.

Actually, this drabbling is harder than it seems.

And certainly.

This drabble put up quite a fight before I was happy with it.

Not all ghost stories need to be horror.
That is good, considering I don't think I could write horror.

Subtlety is hard for me to judge.
I aim for it and hope I hit the mark.

Florid romanticism to the rescue!
(I cannot write horror.)

Dr and Mrs Watson continue to care about each other even years after her death.

This one was a struggle.

I could not see Mary as any other kind of spirit.

I would still like to think it is calm and domestic, even though one of them is a ghost,

Excellent fic, I love that you decided against a creepy fic, because this is heartwarmingly great.
