It’d gone past midnight when this little guttersnipe barrels into me. I grab for him and doesn’t he haul off and kick me in the shins! Never mind he was barefoot, it hurt, so I give chase, blowing my whistle all the while.

The kid ducks into the arcade leading to Pitt Street and that’s when I see the ruckus. Hearing my whistle, five or six men scarper. It was the Limehouse Gang.

I didn’t pursue them because the two men they were beating needed immediate attention. One was Mr Sherlock Holmes, and the other was some fellow called Watson.

Street urchins were treated very much like vermin. It would be difficult for one to approach a policeman for anything. This got the job done though!
