Watson wondered whether he would he find solace or oblivion at the bottom of a bottle.

Hadn’t alcohol ruined all the promise his brother had shown in his youth? It had, and tragically, it was too late for the brothers Watson to reconcile.

In Peshawar, wasn’t it the chief surgeon’s reputation of being at his best when he was well in his cups? Watson’s shoulder could attest to the truth of the matter.

Would liquor soften the loss of Holmes, of Mary?

Yes, but he did not want to lose any of his memories, not even the most painful ones.
