‘You see, Watson, if you install the spirit level properly on the tripod, everything you see will be on the same horizontal plane. Now, hold that rod steady whilst I record my observations.’

Lomax pushed his glasses up to look through the glass and jotted notes in a small book.

‘Now, by comparing the readings, I can determine the change in elevation.’

‘Fascinating,’ said Dr Watson. ‘Holmes will appreciate this. As a librarian, how come you by this knowledge?’

‘My father was a navvy.’

‘You didn’t want to follow is his profession?’

‘No, I couldn’t come to terms with midges.’

Supplementary Notes: I sent my computer, my gps, my levelling theodolite, my notepad, and my glasses into a time machine set to the 1880's for this one, and all that popped out the other side were a spirit level, map and compass, a pencil and notebook, and my glasses!

Good old Lomax! And I agree with him about midges - a 1-millimeter bug with 6" fangs.
