What a downpour, noted Dr Watson from the window of his consulting room. His last patient of the day had left and he pitied anyone forced out in such awful weather.

At the doorbell’s ring, the maid admitted a caller. A drenched messenger-boy stood be-puddling the doctor’s foyer. Shivering, he delivered up a scrap of paper containing familiar scrawl:

Watson,

The Anchor, Ratcliff Highway
Come tonight if convenient — if inconvenient (You know the rest!)
Inquire of Captain Basil’s advertisement for crew
Do dress the part

Tarantara, tarantara!

SH

PS. Would you be so kind as to bring a spare umbrella?

.oOOo.

Love this ;)

And Asimov had a story titled, "I wouldn't send a knight out on a dog like this" :P

Once again the poor doctor is dragged out into the rain. That last line is so typical too!

Well...I really hope Watson has the required clothing to actually dress the part!

Just like Sherlock, to realize that he needed an umbrella only when he sent for his Watson.

Poor Holmes was so caught up in the case that he did not heed the weather warnings!

It's a good thing Holmes knows his Boswell will actually have a spare. Then again, perhaps this has happened before!

You raise a valid point. Would post-hiatus Watson have a trunk of old clothes to go skulking about London in? Certainly not immediately after Holmes's return, but perhaps after a few adventures in which his own clothes become less presentable.
Thanks for commenting!

'Sorry Holmes. No umbrella. You asked me to dress the part, and sailors wear oilskins; they do not use umbrellas.'

English is such a forgiving language. If the right word doesn't exist, steal it from another language. If that still doesn't work, make up a word that will!
(Be-puddling, in my mind, is associated with puppies, not so much as street urchins.)

Hehehe! I see Holmes becoming so fascinated in his investigation that he fails to take the weather into account.
