‘The road will be watched but they won’t expect an approach from the sea,’ said Sherlock Holmes, the tone in his voice signalling his enthusiasm for the night’s work.

Dr John Watson cast his eyes over the rickety rowboat in the moonlight, unsure if he would be of use.

‘Holmes, the rowing— I can’t—’

The detective stopped and looked up, sensing the chagrin in his friend’s voice. He had looked past the doctor’s limits (when he could find them) for so long that he had forgotten them altogether.

‘I’ll row, my friend. Save yourself for the trek to follow.’
