Howard Archer sat back in admiration and took another drink.
‘You should write about your experience at Maiwand! Mr Holmes’s exploits pale in comparison—.’
Dr Watson was already shaking his head in refusal.
‘The public are not interested—’
‘Yes, they bloody well are!’
‘They wouldn’t have the stomach for it; neither do I.’
The young reporter could not hide his disappointment but he relented with a smile.
‘I hope that when you’re ready, you will at least let me interview you.’
‘Perhaps,’ Watson replied, draining his glass and changing the subject. ‘I think the next round is yours.’
