Dr John Watson put down the evening paper. Articles about the Olympic Games filled every page. It was as if the world had ceased to turn. The doctor reflected and reminisced.

His days as Holmes’s biographer had been like the 100 metre dash. Periods of intense activity, rarely followed by days of rest.

These days, with all their obstacles, were more like hurdles. Demanding patients, his aching back, traffic…

Perhaps he should listen to Holmes: retire from medicine, leave the city, and join him in Sussex.

He glanced at his busy appointment book and sighed. Tomorrow would be another marathon.

That's likley all they had in the news even then when the Olympics came to town. Also, fantastic analogy! Aging Watson makes a good point in comparing competitions to his life.

Yes, Watson, you really should realize you're getting past the age where marathons are good for you. A nice retirement in the countryside would suit you down to the ground. ;-)

Love this interpretation on the prompt!

Thank you! I'm glad you think so. I had a hard time trying to write a 100-word story for the Olympic prompt.

In retrospect, I find it interesting that I chose all running events for a man who would have had difficulty with such activities. (Even my sub-conscience revels in angst, it seems.)

In 1908, Watson would have been in his mid-fifties and possibly thinking about retirement.
By 1914, his dreams of retirement would have been shattered.
