Perhaps the signs had been there all along, or perhaps some subtle force had been at play before we met, but my friend had a problem. Sherlock Holmes would go from being near catatonic with ennui to being charged with frenetic energy in a blink of an eye.

As time went by, his darker moods deepened, and conversely, his triumphs grew more exhilarating. Rather than ask for help, he attempted to stem the darker periods by using cocaine. And I, who called myself doctor and friend, would have been more aware had I not been wallowing in my own misfortunes.
