One sunny February afternoon, exiled to his second floor bedroom, John Watson sat at the window which overlooked the wintry mews and the old plane tree.
A neighbourhood boy, pursued by a feral dog sprang for the safety of the tree’s branches, and was trapped.
‘Holmes?’ His fellow lodger must have left. Watson threw on his coat and boots but the mews was empty when he arrived.
Watson leaned against the tree and was surprised by the warmth of the sunlit bark.
‘I thought you were dead,’ he said to the tree. ‘Perhaps there's hope for us all come springtime.’

Date: 2013-08-05 05:28 pm (UTC)I keep thinking of Watson's early days in Baker Street, when he was still being banished to his room whenever Holmes has a business client. Poor fellow was too unwell to venture out unless the weather was "exceptionally genial". What a lonely existence it must have been.
