‘Doctor, do you recognise what I’m playing?’

‘I think so, Holmes. I believe it is called a violin.’

Sometimes, the doctor’s sense of humour could be quite juvenile.

‘Not the instrument, you buffoon... the composition.’

‘Sorry. It’s a pleasant little ditty and sounds familiar, but I cannot place it.’

‘A pleasant little ditty? It’s from "Lieder ohne Worte" by Felix Mendelssohn!’

‘Songs Without... Meanings?’

‘Without words, Watson. “Songs Without Words”,’ Holmes sighed. ‘I keep forgetting you were raised by wolves.’

‘Wolves? Hardly! I grew up in Scotland...’

‘...Heathens, then.’

‘In an English military school...’

‘...Philistines’

‘Yes, let’s agree on ‘Philistines’.’

Mendelssohn's Lieder are primarily piano pieces, so Holmes would have to have arranged them for violin, or else, in an uncharacteristic act of writing, ACD did not get his facts straight before going to press. So, HERE, enjoy some real violin music courtesy of Herr Beethoven, whose violin concerto I enjoy more than Herr Mendelssohn's. (I am being uncourteous to my grammar).

Poor Holmes, doomed to have Watson deliberately misunderstand him!

Poor Holmes cannot stand idiocy and Watson knows exactly what to say to get him going.

I love the interplay here. No one can push your buttons quite like your closest friends can.

Thanks! That is exactly what I wanted to show: silly banter between two good friends.

Heh. Watson's pawky humour comes to the fore.

Yup. I'm glad it showed in the writing!

Haha. Ah, Watson, you shouldn't antagonize him... he might retaliate by playing in the wee hours of the morning. ;)

Yes, that is always a credible possibility, but I think this time they were just goofing around.

And the pawky humour shines through:-p

Thanks! I love the idea that Watson has a sense of humour that isn't biting or too sarcastic.
