Author's Notes: July 25th 2014 prompt: Moved by music.
‘Doctor, do you recognise what I’m playing?’
‘I think so, Holmes. I believe it is called a violin.’
Sometimes, the doctor’s sense of humour could be quite juvenile.
‘Not the instrument, you buffoon... the composition.’
‘Sorry. It’s a pleasant little ditty and sounds familiar, but I cannot place it.’
‘A pleasant little ditty? It’s from "Lieder ohne Worte" by Felix Mendelssohn!’
‘Songs Without... Meanings?’
‘Without words, Watson. “Songs Without Words”,’ Holmes sighed. ‘I keep forgetting you were raised by wolves.’
‘Wolves? Hardly! I grew up in Scotland...’
‘...Heathens, then.’
‘In an English military school...’
‘...Philistines’
‘Yes, let’s agree on ‘Philistines’.’

Mendelssohn's Lieder are primarily piano pieces, so Holmes would have to have arranged them for violin, or else, in an uncharacteristic act of writing, ACD did not get his facts straight before going to press. So, HERE, enjoy some real violin music courtesy of Herr Beethoven, whose violin concerto I enjoy more than Herr Mendelssohn's. (I am being uncourteous to my grammar).
