Mr Holmes finished explaining his haemoglobin reagent discovery and then regarded me with the scrutiny of a sergeant-major. I wondered if I would pass muster.

Had he spotted where I had mended the collar of my overcoat? My Inverness was second-hand; the good one I purchased in India was inadequate for London winters. This one did not fit as well, but at least it was warm and my clever stitches hid the gash. Mr Holmes paused only for a moment then he smiled and shook my hand again.

‘I have my eye on a suite in Baker Street,’ he said.

Yes, there is none of this "I see that you are a surgeon and have fallen on hard times. That you have mended your overcoat tells me that you are short on funds. That you used a very precise stitch that both reduces the formation of scar tissue and is virtually invisible tells me that you have excellent surgical skills."

Since I am not writing BBC, the Belstaff hero coat is out. Lending of an overcoat in times of need seemed like a good path that others would take.

Ha! Watson thinks that maybe Holmes did not spot his clever stitches. I wanted to subtly suggest that Holmes did see the mending and decided that despite his poverty Watson would make an excellent fellow-lodger.
