When Dr Watson returned from his afternoon walk he found a calling card pinned to the sitting room door.
The strange markings on the front included five staves, a treble clef, and a single note completing a musical bar. Watson carefully examined them before turning the card over. The verso was printed “Sherlock Holmes.”
Watson knew enough about musical notation to decipher the bar to read b-sharp. His fellow-lodger was not at home but another card was pinned to Watson’s armchair.
"Watson, you asked me to leave you a note if I was going out. (Take that, you irredeemable punster!)"
