Another telegram from the War Office. Harry Andrews took the envelope from his dispatcher and mounted his bicycle.
Harry longed to trade his messenger’s uniform for an infantry one like his brother’s. Instead, he would bring the dread news to yet another family. The twenty-minute ride from the Fulworth Post Office to the lonely cottage on the downs seemed much longer.
Dashing tears from his eyes old Mr Holmes read the contents, smiled, and then shook Harry’s hand.
‘Clearly, this was not the one you were expecting,’ said the boy
‘No, this is good news. My friend is coming home!’
