Dr Watson closed the ledger with a heavy sigh. ‘If things continue the way they have been, I will be bankrupt within three months.’

‘Can our friend, Dr Stamford, give you some locum work?’

‘No. He’s barely getting by as it is.’

‘What about the position the Medical Board offered you?’

‘As a ship’s doctor?’

‘Yes. Oh... Right. I was forgetting about your mal-de-mer.’

‘If only my pension had not been so drastically reduced…’

‘Leave it to me. I will have it reviewed. Someone in the British Government owes me a favour.’

Holmes' worst fear would be that Watson would have to leave London for a more affordable life. Probably as the local doctor in some dusty old village.
