Sherlock Holmes stormed into the sitting room and slammed the door.

Watson looked up from his newspaper. ‘Did Tafton get away?’

‘No, he’s dead. He was cornered and had a gun. Lestrade and company opened fire and killed him.’

‘Oh dear.’

‘All my work, days living in disguise, all the minuscule threads that had to come together just so… all for naught! With Tafton cooling in the morgue there is no longer any need for the details of the case.’

Poor Holmes, thought Watson, robbed of his denouement.

‘Please sit, Holmes. I, for one, want to hear everything about it.’

Thanks! One of the few nuggets I borrow from BBC's Sherlock is the idea that genius requires an audience. Although this Watson would likely not think of it in those terms, he instinctively fills that rôle.
