30 Days of Sherlock Holmes
Apr. 4th, 2011 10:14 pmDay 04 – Your Favorite Holmes
Here is where I show my lack of canonical cred in my selection. My favourite Holmes is the Holmes who introduced me to it all back when I was an impressionable youngster. I remain impressionable, don't get me wrong!
My first exposure to Sherlock Holmes was the 1979 movie Murder By Decree with Christopher Plummer as Holmes and the great James Mason as Watson. The movie has come under criticism by the Holmesian community for the actors being too old for the characters, and for the characters being out of character with the original canon. Phooey, I say! It is not a bad thing to have a Holmes who is actually seen to care about the people he is trying to help. It is also good to show a good relationship with one's Boswell. In Murder By Decree, Holmes and Watson have mutual respect for each other as professionals and kind regard for each other as friends.
Because of the characterisations, this movie had such a great effect on me that I went and read the whole canon and I still love it today. (It may also explain many of the tendencies I have as a fan fiction writer.)
