Captain Gantry of the Orontes would have preferred to wait until evening.
The offloading of returning soldiers always drew a crowd. Some were family or friends coming to meet their loved-ones but most were gawkers arriving at the end of the pier to watch the spectacle.
He was appalled at how poorly his charges had fared the gale and cursed his ship’s surgeon for their deplorable state.
‘They had a doctor,’ shrugged the surgeon.
‘Him?’ Gantry pointed to the poor wretch with the white-knuckled grip on his litter. ‘Unfortunately, doctor, these patients will remain your responsibility. They’ve quarantined Netley Hospital.’
