‘Watson, I am very much indebted to Murray, your orderly, for getting you back to the British line at Maiwand. If not for his courage we would have never met. Whatever happened to him?’

‘I’ve made several enquiries but nobody seems to know for sure. He survived Maiwand virtually unscathed as far as I remember, and so he would have been assigned to ready Kandahar for the impending siege.

‘I suspect he was attached to one of those unfortunate forays that were attempted before General Roberts’ relief column arrived. Several good men never returned from those and were presumed lost.’

Yes, there has to be a reason why Watson did not get in touch with Murray.

I haven't made my mind up whether Murray is presumed lost or actually deceased. (Plus, death fics will have warnings.)
