‘What now?’ John Rance scowled at the frantic knocking at his door. Why couldn’t a poor copper get some sleep? The night shift was hard enough and last night’s rain, although not a downpour, had been light but constant; the type that, over time, erodes mountains.
It was those two inspectors, the pointy-faced Lestrade and the ham-handed Gregson, wanting to know what he had told the consulting detective about the Drebber murder. Apparently, they had been made fools of in the press and shite like that flows downhill.
Well, at least I got a half-sovereign out of it, Rance mused.
