‘Poisoned?!? Mr Holmes, Professor Payton was shot in the head!’
‘Of course, Inspector, but that was only a side-effect.’
‘How? The professor’s life was threatened. We expected poison and tested everything first.’
‘Indeed. He was warned to take all precautions, and yet he flung open his window. It would have been an easy shot for a sniper.’
‘It still doesn’t add up.’
‘Dr Watson and I conducted further experiments. Singly inert, there were two unidentified elements in his cigarettes and his water. The cigarettes first make you thirsty, and the water makes you feel like you can’t breathe, right Watson?’
