Captain Watson joined the 66th Berkshires in April 1880 and Surgeon-Major Preston had no regrets in arranging the transfer of his young colleague from the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers. And Watson, for his part, earnestly tried to uphold the high standards of his new regiment. So it was in mild horror that he found that he had overslept. After a frenzy of ablutions and dressing, Watson appeared in the mess much to the amusement of his fellow officers.

‘Look who’s entered puberty,’ Lt Frazer quipped. Laughter erupted.

Watson’s confusion only added to the mirth.

He found the inked-in moustache hours later.

Yup! Good old Phils; I get so much mileage from him. I think I have even figured out the situation that would have caused the animosity between Frazer and Major Preston. (Muahaha! says my headcanon)
