After a long day the door to one’s domicile is a welcome sight. As I stepped in, I was confronted by three persons. The first was Sherlock Holmes, grim-faced and pointing at a valise, my valise, packed near the door.

Then Mrs Hudson, our housekeeper, handed me a basket. ‘I’ve packed all your favourites in case you get peckish on the train.’

The third was my old friend, Colonel Hayter. My surprise was slow to register; he hardly ever came to the city.

‘Watson, Mr Holmes informed me you needed a reprieve. You’re coming to Reigate and that’s an order.’
