It would be fair to say that Holmes is satisfied in retirement. The present generation of police have been eager to adopt his methods and he was glad to leave London in their capable hands.
I, on the other hand, am just hitting my stride. I am healthier now than I was as a younger man and my practice is both challenging and rewarding.
Neither of us speak of the war to come; as if our silence would forestall the machinations of preceding decades; as if giving voice to our fears shall cause the inevitable calamity to come to pass.
