Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson followed as quickly as they could but the smugglers had disappeared into the landscape.
A closer inspection revealed a cave’s mouth carefully concealed in the underbrush. Watson quickly lit the dark lantern and headed into the maw but Holmes approached with uncharacteristic caution. Watson had continued further into the depths before he realised that the detective was no longer with him.
‘Hurry, Holmes,’ Watson urged. ‘We must catch up to them before they find another exit.’
The detective stood stalk still, wide-eyed and searching amongst the stalactites.
‘Is it a trap?’ asked Watson.
‘No, bats.’
