‘And who is this young fellow?’ I asked referring to the dull-eyed ragged child in Wiggins’ band of Baker Street Irregulars.
‘Jamie, sir,’ he replied. I looked back at Wiggins.
‘We found ‘im last week. Runaway from the workhouse. See where they beat ‘im?’
Wiggins lifted Jamie’s workhouse-issue shirt. Lashes and bruises covered his torso and I could see his heartbeat through his skeletal ribcage. I had seen starvation and malnutrition in my travels but this was not supposed to happen in London.
‘Come round to Baker Street at teatime and I’ll see to it that you all get fed.’
