‘Watson, truly, I am not tired at all. You know that I cannot sleep whilst a case is in progress.’
I regarded my fellow-lodger with a mix of admiration and jealousy. As most people do, Holmes took for granted the ability to sleep through the night at will. His active mind would not settle unless he willed it to do so, and that was not his nature.
‘Perhaps you should take your own advice and go to bed,’ he said in his cavalier manner.
‘If only that were possible. I would give the world for a night of restful sleep.’
