‘Watson, please show Señor Sarasate the case you recovered,’ said Mr Sherlock Holmes.
‘Can it be?’ asked our client as he reverently fingered the singed violin case and opened it.
‘I believe it is unharmed but you should inspect it thoroughly,’ said Holmes. ‘If it is damaged, you are welcome to use my own.’
The maestro performed his examination.
‘She is perfect but I would have declined your generous offer in any event. My violin is like a first love: others who pass through your life may be more charming and otherwise appealing, but your first love is always special.’
