‘Mr Holmes, what is that horrible stench?’ hissed our long-suffering housekeeper, pinching her nose.
‘They are Dr Watson’s clothes. He slipped in the muck of the Thames foreshore.’
‘Is he okay?’
‘He is embarrassed and tired from the walk from Rotherhithe; no cabbie would afford us their conveyance.’
‘It was good of you to accompany him.’
‘Erm… if by accompanying him you mean walking half a block upwind from him.’
‘Ugh! Please put them in the laundry basket and leave it outside the front door.’
‘But they might get stolen.’
‘That wouldn’t be the worst possible outcome, now, would it?’
