‘Can you spot me a fiver?’ I asked of my fellow-lodger as we continued through the stables.
‘Watson,’ sighed the detective. ‘Will you repay me, or is this another pretty pony?’
‘This one is a sure thing. His name is Excelsior and I’ve checked the racing form; his pedigree is impeccable. See?’
‘Watson, this horse has never won a race!’
‘He’s never won a flat race; the Grand National is a steeplechase. The horse has to be faster, jump higher, and be stronger. Excelsior’s sire was a great jumper and his dame was a fast runner. He cannot possibly lose!’

Supplementary Notes: Excelsior is loosely based on Voluptuary (1878 - September 1902), a Thoroughbred race horse, bred by the Royal Stud, who won the 1884 Grand National in his first attempt.
