‘I said, Watson, that you are out of sorts this morning,’ said Mr Sherlock Holmes peering over his breakfast coffee.
How could he have known? Yes, I had another bad night, but I staved off sleep trying to avoid the nightmares lingering near the edges of consciousness. I was sure I managed to set myself to rights before entering our sitting room. Ablutions performed, I checked the mirror. Twice.
‘Was it the Maiwand dream,’ Holmes pursued.
‘Yes, that blasted nightmare again. How did you know?’
‘I didn’t. I watched Mrs Hudson’s cat. He’s a keen observer of the human condition.’
