After the events I later described as the Adventure of the Creeping Man, I took Roy, Professor Presbury’s wolfhound, back to Kensington, with the plan to rehabilitate his trust in people which had been so badly shaken, and then find him a home with people who would love and cherish him.
This was not an easy task. Nobody wanted a dog that had turned on his owner.
With Holmes ensconced in Sussex, Roy became my constant shadow and confidant, and as time passed, I found I could not bear to part with him. We needed each other.
Welcome home, Roy.

Supplementary Notes: At the time of this writing, my own hound lies snoring on the floor behind my desk. Destined to be a therapy dog due to his sterling character, he was pressed into full-time duty supporting me through the isolation of the pandemic. So this one is dedicated to all the family pets and their infinite ability to help their people through tough times. Thank you, Z.
