‘You know I love puzzles, Watson, and these recent ones have been more challenging than most, and yet they possess an familiar element which I am finding difficult to place.’

‘Two burglaries, three muggings, one resulting in death, and an accidental poisoning. They seem unrelated. The victims were not known to each other, and the locations of the instances are quite varied.’

‘True, and yet these crimes seem deliberately random. Crimes usually have a purpose. This group of crimes with no purpose is suspicious: they bear the indelible stamp of Professor Moriarty.

‘But Holmes, he’s dead, isn’t he? ISN’T HE?!?'

Supplementary Notes: Holmes is right about the randomness of crime. Most crime is purposeful, deliberate, and easy to understand. Of course a single random event of opportunity may pop up from time to time, but a cluster of random events means there may be something else afoot. Originally, Holmes was finally able to detect Moriarty's crimes by the skill they were made to seem like something else.
