Sherlock Holmes bounced up the seventeen steps to the flat he shared with Dr Watson. An eccentric client had gifted the detective with two tickets to the West End’s most popular show. Holmes preferred more cerebral entertainments but he knew this sort was perfect for his fellow-lodger.

Dr Watson was dressed in the suit he used for infrequent Sunday services.

‘I have tickets for that musical everyone's talking about.’

‘Not today, Holmes. Evans is in London and we have other plans.’

‘Take these tickets, then!’

‘Thank you but not today.’

Evans, Holmes remembered was Watson’s comrade from Afghanistan. Of course.

Supplementary Notes: On July 27 1880, Ayub Khan and his 24,000 belligerents handed the 2400 British and colonial troops their hats (so to speak).

Of course. You do not forget that anniversary any more than Watson does.
