The hunt was all that mattered. At first, this was true. Tigers! Dangerous man-eaters plagued human settlements. They had to be hunted down and destroyed. Upstart native warlords defied their British masters creating an even greater danger, providing an even greater thrill. That these hunts were covert and his triumphs remained private mattered not. He revelled in them. The hunter retired but the assassin continued on.

Along came Professor Moriarty offering him power and money to crush his enemies. But what were power and money to him when there was nothing more satisfying than the gentle squeeze of a trigger?

Precisely why I love the character.

There is something so refreshing about a true hunter.

Thanks!
This guy just likes to kill, and he is about to find out that Holmes is alive and has returned to London!

Thanks!
I like the idea that ambition, revenge, and honour have nothing to do with Moran's ambitions. He just likes to kill.

I always thought that Moran was under utilised in the Canon and should have made a fair better adversary than he did.

I think you'd like my OC Sergeant-Major Reginald Blood, methinks he is carved from the same block of cold marble as Moran...must have something to do with being in the army stationed India etc.

Poor ACD... couldn't come up with a greater foe than Moriarty. Sebastian Moran paled in comparison. (No wonder Holmes got bored of the criminal element and retired to bee-keeping!)

Please, please, please do not have it turn out that Sergeant-Major Reginald Blood is a vampire (There are too many vampire fics out there and the name 'Blood' is very suggestive!)

:D

Fear not SM-Reginald Blood is quite human, just he makes a wonderful assassin and he has no qualms about killing anyone.

In truth he is quite despicable ,there is nothing he wont do.

And yet he has some honour for if someone were to insult Queen Victoria for instance or even his old regiment...They'd better make sure they were very good at hiding, he's been known to travel continents to "get his prey".

I'll have to post some artwork of him.

Sorry for the crazy slow response! This is fantastic and makes me happy! And also creeped out. Good combination! ;)

I have some drabbling to do...

I'm so glad you enjoyed this! Thank you for being so patient. The Colonel was a tricksy character to track down. It took me a long time to realise that he just loved to kill!

I like that - kind of Holmes-like in the way he has something he is the very best at and it's all he wants to do.

(I should clarify that I like that about your story, not about the character. So I don't sound so creepy.)

Ooooo! I love how you've captured the transition from hunter to assassin! And the fact that Moriarty is just a resource so he can continue his hunt... chilling!

Thanks! Either Moriarty was a genius and recognised that Moran just loved to kill, or he was completely oblivious and thought that he had the upper hand. Either way, Moran cannot be manipulated by honour, ambition, or wealth. Moriarty's last instructions were to make sure Holmes did not survive the Reichenbach encounter. He failed three years ago, but his informants have just told him that Holmes has been spotted again in London. Holmes was 'the one who got away', but Moran knows that a good hunter must be patient...

Feel free to like both!
Villains have to be interesting in order to make the protagonists earn their place.
