Transitional Home for Veterans
Southampton
November 6, 1880

Unable to perform these actions for himself, the young officer grimly endured his morning shave and ablutions.  His necessarily bland diet failed to tempt his appetite.  Strengthening exercises left him hurting and fatigued.  The pitying looks from the other patients and the intolerable cheeriness of his carers was becoming increasingly harder to face.

Mistaking his need for solitude as piety, they wheeled him into the chapel.  He vowed, as soon as he could manage it, he would seek his place among the Empire’s loungers and idlers.  Surely, even the worst day in London would be better than another day here.
