‘Can I keep them, Major Watson?’ pleaded Corporal McCann. ‘They’re just helpless wee bairns. I’ll train them on the rats, sir! Rats are a big problem, you said so yourself!’

And so it came to pass that Private Whiplash and Private Snowbell joined the 15th Field Hospital. Snowbell excelled in her ratting duties, while Whiplash was McCann’s dog through and through.

It was Whiplash who led the rescuers to his master when their ambulance overturned. But it was Snowbell who stayed with Watson each night, keeping him company after he discharged McCann and sent him, and Whiplash, home to Inverness.
