Weeks had passed since the great snowfall had been cleared away. Last night’s accumulation was meagre in comparison, yet slippery enough to warrant caution. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson paused during their walk.

Watson toed the snow with his boot to assess its compacting qualities:  the clump held together in a satisfactory way. The ghost of a smile passed his face.

‘In the words of the playground vernacular, ‘Don’t start something you cannot finish’, Doctor’, warned Holmes, taking a step back.

Watson grinned, already deciding against taking action. Knowing that he could still be considered a threat was good enough.

Ha ha! Of course Holmes deserves a sound snow-drubbing!
I would love to see YOU write one!

*GRIN* I love that it is so very in character! I could imagine this happening.

Would John be so circumspect, I wonder?

Thank you for the compliment!
(And BBC John's circumspection would be tempered by what he found in the refrigerator that morning!)

Hee hee hee! That's fabulous. Yes, never discount Watson as a threat. ;-)

I love how Holmes is acting all nonchalant, but takes a step back anyway *snerk*

Poor Holmes! He knows that he would be sorely outclassed in a snowball fight with Watson! Thank you for commenting!

I would have had Sherlock walking away confident that he had backed the good Doctor down when a snowball took his hat off his head, and have him curse whatever god existed that gave the man such bloody good aim as he attempted to put together his own assault with limited results...but then I like watching Sherlock suffer.

YOU should totally write that vignette!
I only had 100 words to play with and Watson felt confident he did not need to throw that snowball to make his point. (But Holmes did get to suffer a little!)

I could just picture that sneaky look crawl its way onto Watson's face. Holmes is right to be weary.

Heh heh heh! Holmes could hardly mistake that mischievious look!

Oh, I just loved the style of this. Very clever, especially the part about the "compacting qualities," and I particularly liked Holmes' line. =D And that last bit, "Knowing that he could still be considered a threat was good enough," was positively perfect. ♥ This felt very complete and flowed extremely well (in a way that drabbles often do not), so super-kudos to you!

I do have a question, though - and please forgive me if I'm being awfully obtuse - but what is the "gaslight" part of the fandom? I googled it, and I'm assuming you're referring to the Gaslight Grimoire stories...which are, what, science fiction/fantasy/supernatural pastiches? I've never heard of them before and I hope I'm not the only one who's so clueless, so I'm quite curious to know more about them.

Thank you for your lovely compliments!
This was my first attempt at the 100 word drabble. I’m glad you liked it!

As for the term gaslight, in this case it refers to the Victorian era setting, rather than BBC Sherlock, or Holmes in Space, or other alternative universes. And while being set in Victorian times, it is non-specific and may be canon, Granada, or Ritchie!verse.

Ah, okay. I actually did perceive it as Victorian, but I'd just never run into that term before - so I've learned something new from fandom yet again. =] Who needs socially acceptable education when you can learn from fanfiction? =D

Come on Watson!
Trip him with your cane and then jump on his back. You can get at least three handfuls of snow down his shirt before he knocks you off!

Heh heh heh!
I picture a snowball fight between the two would end up as a draw, more or less. Watson with the early lead, finally overwhelmed by Holmes, because he cannot stop laughing.

Adorable. I love the whole 'I know you know what I'm thinking, and I know you know I know what you're thinking - so we'll consider it done' - seems to be a leitmotif of Holmes & Watson's interactions.

Thank you! I wrote this as an early vignette, circa 1881, but now that I think about it, it would play well as a retirement piece too.
