‘It’s good to have you finally back in Baker Street, Watson.’

‘Thank you, Holmes. I prefer to recover at home.’

‘This telegram just arrived. You’ll be pleased to hear that John Clay has been sentenced to ten years’ incarceration.’

‘Pleased? Not really… He let himself be captured rather than leaving me to die.’

‘No doubt serving his own purposes.’

‘Perhaps, but I was very ill, and utterly at his mercy.’

‘Anyway, he’s off to Princetown Penitentiary and that’s the end of it!’

‘Is it?’

‘Doctor, you’re chuckling!?’

‘Indeed I am!    John Clay likes Princetown… He’s escaped from there twice already!’

One of those few times when Watson is aware of something before Holmes. Or at least he considered it and found the humor in it before his friend did. Excellent wrap-up to the tale, it amazing really that you fit so much story into 300 words. Xhallenge well met!

This is one of those times when Watson has a different awareness of a situation than Holmes does. In this case, Watson has spent at least a week in the company of John Clay. I characterise Watson as having the ability to understand people, whereas Holmes's knowledge is more superficial.
As to the humour: the drabble is followed up by a round of laughter by both Holmes, with the idea that Clay will escape, and Watson, who appreciates that Holmes will do nothing to prevent Clay's escape.
