Dr Watson’s scream was swiftly muffled by a strong hand.

‘Steady, Watson. I’ve got you. You’re safe,’ said a familiar voice, ‘Hush! Our enemies may yet find us.’

Disoriented, Watson’s heart raced. It often did when he fought to escape his nightmares. The arms around him eased their hold and he recognised the voice and the familiar tobacco scent of Sherlock Holmes.

‘Holmes, I can’t see!’

‘It’s dark and our lantern has gone out. We’re in the catacombs beneath the cathedral.’

‘Then, I’m not dreaming?’

‘Dreaming, no. Lower your voice and speak slowly. Tell me about concussion: the symptoms and treatments.’

‘Concussion can result from a blow to the head... but, Holmes, you know all this!’

‘Please humour me, Doctor.’

‘Very well. Common symptoms include memory loss; usually short-term… Confusion... Slurring of speech… Seizures are not uncommon in severe cases--’

‘Indeed.’

‘--and nausea, vomiting...’

‘Marvelous.’

A suspicion occurred to him. ‘Holmes... have you been injured?’

‘Not at all. I’m fit as a fiddle. Pray continue. What about treatments?’

‘The patient must be kept warm, and it is imperative to keep them awake... are you sure you’re all right?’

‘Perfectly. Lean back against me. It is going to be a long night.’

Watson did as he was bidden and settled against his friend. Despite the cold stone floor, the detective held him warm and protected. Holmes gave a sigh of relief.

Minutes later, Watson’s scream was swiftly muffled.

‘Steady, Watson,’ a familiar voice implored. ‘I’ve got you. You’re safe.’

Thanks!
It was a challenge to combine angst, peril, banter, and a non-slashy embrace...
I'm glad you liked it!

Much more left unsaid than spelled out. Very subtle!

May I friend you?

Thanks! I strive for subtlety but do not always achieve it.
And I'd be honoured if you friend me.

Thanks for your enthusiasm!
I think this one will remain as it is. I have too many other plot bunnies in the fire at the moment!

Holmes was right, it is going to be a long night, and it's going to require all his patience.

Oh, ow. Fortunately Sherlock Holmes can hold all their marbles until they can get to safety.

Good thing Watson has a hard head, considering how often he gets clunked. (And developing a resistance to lead poisoning would not go amiss either!)
