'Whatever is emotional is opposed to that true cold reason which I place above all things.'
- Sherlock Holmes [The Sign of Four]
Watson is in love. Hours of obsessive preening have transformed him into the very image of the young suitor on his way to woo the fair young lady.
A good tailor’s alterations may disguise his second-hand dinner jacket but one misstep on the dance floor and she realises that his walking stick is a necessity, and not a fashionable affectation. Society women are practical creatures. They seek security as much as sentiment. No matter how charming a gentleman he may be, a half-pay cripple is not what they seek. And on some level, he knows it. Still, defying all reason, he perseveres.
He is doomed but I cannot tell him so. Instead, I say that he is confusing lust with love. He accuses me of being naïve. Me?! Never has there been such name-calling between pot and kettle!
If it were merely a case of a specific young lady, it could be dealt with. Nobody can withstand the intensity of my scrutiny. But no, my besotted friend is in love with the idea of love, and once such a foolish romantic notion has taken root, it cannot be easily eradicated. Inevitably, he will attach himself to the first young woman to overlook his limits and she will break his heart.
It will not do.
