Title:  Sunbeam
Author: [info]capt_facepalm
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (Gaslight)
Characters: Dr John H. Watson
Summary: It will take more than a ray of sunshine
Warnings: (dark thoughts)
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: July 6th prompt: (The poem "Futility", by Wilfred Owen)

Despite the streaming sunshine, Dr Watson remained in bed.

Yesterday’s body on the railroad tracks was less a corpse and more of a jigsaw puzzle.

The note found in one pocket ruled out foul play. Its rambling stream of vitriol, blaming his dismissal from the army for his sorry state, was the last testament of ex-sergeant Trent, late of the Royal Berkshires.

Despair had won and another fine soldier was lost.

No, Watson would stay in bed today, lest he follow in Trent’s footsteps, or his hand stray to the revolver in the sunlit desk just across the room.

.oOOo.

OH MY! That is profound and shocking. Yet so sad. Poor Watson. And what will a certain Consulting Detective say about that? He needs to help his Boswell or at least play a tune on his violin for him ;)

It's going to take some powerful violin tunes to fix this.

Poor Watson. Lestrade just thinks he's upset because he saw a gruesome body which happened to be an acquaintence. Holmes might have a clue that there is something else going on, but perhaps not.

Definitely a good day to stay in bed. Poor Watson. :-(

From the outside, it looks like Watson is having a lay-in, when really he's having a life or death struggle.

So depressing and powerful at the same time. Especially the second line.

It's a bit gruesome, but it would take something powerful to knock Watson off kilter.

Poor fellow! A beautiful sunbeam shining on the desk wherein his revolver lays. So simple to get out of bed and succomb to its siren song, yet he resists.

Chilling.

Chilling, perhaps. But Watson wins this lonely struggle. His response to the previous day's horror is one of shock. He does not know if he trusts himself so he vows to stay in bed in case temptation becomes too appealing.

Yes, he does win here. Recognises his limits and acts accordingly.
