‘Mrs Seacole? I’m Dr Watson. Dr Stamford sent me to see you today.’
‘You should call me “Mother”. All my boys do.’
‘Your boys?’
‘Soldiers, dear.’
‘Of course. I did not wish to presume.’
‘You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive. —Don’t be embarrassed. I know my tropical diseases and you still bear marks of the typhoid.’
‘Erm… Mrs—Mother, I’m supposed to be examining you, not t’other way around.’
‘Yes, my lamb. You will remind me of my tricky heart and forbid my eating fatty foods. Now heed an old doctress’ advice: Before you resume doctoring, heal thyself first.’

Date: 2013-07-09 06:11 pm (UTC)Mrs Seacole was very fond of her boys and they adored her.
So if some wan ex-army doctor showed up at her door, I picture her giving him a wee scolding, adjusting his scarf, and then sending him on his way with a plateful of biscuits and enough cab fare to return to Baker Street.
