‘Fighting amongst yourselves again, Wiggins?’ said Dr John Watson, stopping at his back door to examine the boy’s eye.

‘Snotty deserved it. He’s a weakling.’

‘A good captain looks after even the least of his men.’

The boys were unconvinced.

‘There is a French tale set before the Revolution…’

‘Swish-chop!’ exclaimed Danny. The others sniggered.

‘…About the King’s elite bodyguards, and how their commitment to each other was their greatest strength.’

Other raggedy children drifted towards the promise of a storytelling.

Later, upstairs, Holmes paused. Surely he was imagining the raucous calls of ‘All for one and one for all!’
